Starting the Journey to Comic Book Enlightenment.
Superheroes are everywhere. They're on my TV, my websites, my vitamins and they're even on my toilet paper. I can't escape the Avengers constantly punching themselves into my life.
In the past, my only solace was going to the movies but now that's all gone to hell! Every movie is now based on a comic book. X-Men, Deadpool, Watchmen, 300, History of violence blah blah blah... there is no quarter for a cinephile like me. Now most of these movies are decent, with a few exceptions, but along with it they have brought a plague to my local cineplex: comic book nerd rage about how the movie got it wrong.
It's something I can't comprehend. I'm always happy when one of my favorite stories are brought to life to the big screen. Having your favorite moments in one form of media recreated in another is a great way to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of the artistic medium. Sometimes the translation into a new medium brings out something profound the original work never dreamed of (Cough Cough, Jaws) But not for comic books apparently.
The movies are all wrong even when they are right! I've been told. Either a character’s customer doesn’t have the right shade of purple or not enough children died in Civil War. The most confusing one to me is how Spider-Man must have web-shooters or he’s not really Spider-Man. Like it doesn’t matter if the story is good, if the character remains the same then it’s a good movie.
To me, that means the source material, I.E the comics, are some of the best stories ever written. That there is no possible way for highly trained hard working movie craftsman can ever get it right because they don’t follow the comics.
Really, I don't know why only Marvel/Disney gets a pass. I'm sick of being out of the loop. I like being in loops. I'm going to suck it up and jump into the world of spandex and punching. I'm going to read me some comic books!
And since this is 20 freaking 16, I'm going to post my adventures online!
My name is Chuck Flamingo and I am an ignorant comic book reader.
Now per Wikipedia, there is over six decades worth of comics just from the all mighty marvel and even more from the ancient D.C. Comics.
On a side note I learned "D.C" is not a reference to our nation’s capital but stands for Dark Comics. So anytime anyone says "D.C Comics" they are really saying "Dark Comics Comics." No wonder they are falling behind at the box office.
Well not wanting to sound like an idiot around my new comic book peers, I went with Marvel. They do make the most movies and have a smaller catalog of six decades of comics instead of eight. Less for me to catch up on. Now that I have the will to throw away all pretense of reading literature written by James Joyce, I need to get my ignorant hands on some comics. To the bookstore!
Well, not now. I’ve got some bills to pay first before I spend a bunch of money on comic books.
